Plagioclase Love
A stratigraphic section of the volcanic products from the infamous Krakatoa eruption, a massive Plinian eruption characterized by huge outputs of pumice and ash that were reworked by blazing hot currents of gas.

Volcanic Stratigraphy
A rendition of the volcanic system beneath the main Krakatoa edifice, which is composed of a series of interconnected magma chambers deep within the Earth.

Distinguish yourself as an interdisciplinary geologist with this coat of arms, showcasing the classic rock hammer to represent field work, the test tube signifying the field of geochemistry with the ocean motif giving nod to our overlap with oceanography, as well as the seismogram from the 2001 Nisqually earthquake for all our geophysicists.

An illustration of the Krakatoa volcanic system in the months before the cataclysmic eruption on August 26, 1883. In this time period intermittent volcanic activity was observed at all three of the main vents, Perboewatan, Danan, and Rakata. The volcanic island illustrated here was ultimately destroyed by the paroxysmal eruption that culminated in caldera collapse.

Krakatoa Eruption
This diagram illustrates the structure of the earth, focusing on the lithosphere (the crust and upper mantle) by showcasing the life of an oceanic slab. Oceanic crust is produced from basaltic magmas at the divergent plate boundary of the Mid-Ocean Ridge (left) and are transported along the conveyer belt of seafloor spreading to a subduction zone, where the dense slab of mafic crust subducts under the relatively buoyant continent! At the point of contact between the two tectonic plates an accretionary wedge is formed alongside an oceanic trench. As the slab descends into the mantle it is metamorphosed and dehydrated, producing magma and creating the serpentinized mantle wedge. Rising magmas generate volcanism and can lead to the establis...

Subduction Zone Diagram
This painting was based off a photo I took through a telescope lens of the moon during an astronomy class. The texture and craters present on the surface was incredible, and I was trying to capture some of that beauty!

Half Moon Painting
This cross-section shows the layers of the Earth looking at the materials of each layer, instead of looking at it as a heat map. The big difference here is the mantle, which is made of peridotite, a rock that is often bright green! Convection cells are drawn in to show the movement of material within the mantle, a process that occurs over incredibly long timescales. The outer and inner core are both made of iron and nickel alloys, while the inner core is solid and likely has Widmanstätten patterns, similar to those seen in meteorites. I made this diagram because I feel like a lot of people don’t know what the interior of this planet looks like.

Layers of the Earth Diagram
Geoscience cross section with hard rock, soft rock, climate, and ocean science represented! Environmental sciences are inherently interconnected and it's important to recognize that collaboration, although I wish I had found a way to incorporate the field of biology into this.
