The 1980s - a time when the popularity of home video and video nasties complimented each other perfectly. And no matter what people say, or which tape won the format wars, the Betamax was by far the better quality cassette!

Films distributed by notorious home video label Go Video could be found behind the counter of every video store in the UK - they were responsible for bringing video nasties such as Cannibal Holocaust and SS Experiment Camp into the home (and the grapevine of every schoolyard) in the late 70s and early 80s.

Jay & Silent Bob found out, in Dogma, to their dismay, that the Chicago suburb-town of Shermer, Illinois, was actually an entirely fictional place, dreamed up by the master of the 80s teen comedy/drama - John Hughes. Many of the films he wrote or directed were set in the same fictitious universe. In a 1999 interview he revealed the scale of this "Shermer-verse". 15 years worth of notebooks detailed how Ferris Bueller (FB's Day Off) was friends with Sam Baker (16 Candles), John Bender (The Breakfast Club) lived three doors down from Del Griffiths (Planes, Trains & Automobiles) and so on. What a shame his untimely death meant we did not get to see this 'verse expanded upon. The bulldog mascot was briefly mention in Ferris Buelle...

Never was my title of "The Car's The Star" truer than in the mid 80s toy line and cartoon M.A.S.K where seemingly innocuous vehicles could transform into combat ready vehicle to fight crime and the evil forces of Miles Mayhem and V.E.N.O.M, From top to bottom: • Thunderhawk - A Chevrolet Camaro which turns into a fighter jet. Piloted by MASK's leader, millionaire playboy Matt Trakker. • Hurricane - A 1957 Chevy which turns into a tank. Dungeons & Dragons was one of the best cartoons of the 1980s - and here is one of the reasons - In all their glory - the much sought after weapons of power, which Venger would literally kill to get his hands on. hank's energy bow, Sheila's cloak of invisibility, Presto's magic hat, Eric's shield, Bobby's club and Diana's staff.

Spoiled rich-kid, selfish and seemingly cowardly yet somehow the most human of Dungeon Master’s champions, Eric, with his magic shield, often placed himself between danger and the other kids, protecting them from arrows, rock falls, magic spells and more. By far my favourite of the Dungeons & Dragons characters. The emblem of a Griffin features on Eric's shield.

The legitimate side of Miles Mayhem's Vicious Evil Network of Mayhem (VENOM) - Snake Oil Petrol Company. The logo for Snake Oil graced the side of his Outlaw vehicle (a tanker truck which transformed into an assault and command installation - driven by Miles "Wolf" Mayhem and Nash "Goon" Gorey). With sneaky tactics like this, only M.A.S.K. can save the day!

If there's one thing that The Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy has taught me, it's that the Babel Fish is probably the oddest thing in the universe. Well and that the Earth is mostly harmless... And that dolphins are far more intelligent than we thought... Oh, and that the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is the best drink in existence... And not forgetting that a towel is the most massively useful thing a hitch hiker can carry.
