Two Great Western Railway Class 4575 small prairies working together in the Royal Forest of Dean. Engine 5541 is a resident engine on the Dean Forest Railway with Engine 5521 as a visiting locomotive. 5521 is painted in London Transport colours and carries the number L150 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Metropolitan line.

GWR Prairie Tank Locomotive Number of views as of 4th March 2018 = 800. Took a little trip down memory lane a few weeks ago aboard a steam train hauled by this GWR 4575 class 'Prairie' tank locomotive on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire railway from Toddington to Cheltenham Racecourse. Number 5542 was built in 1928 at a total cost of just over £3600, and entered service in the Gloucester area, before being transferred later to Bristol, Taunton, Newton Abbott and Westbury. Withdrawn in 1961 by British Railways after completing almost a million miles of service, the engine then spent 14 years rusting away in a scrapyard before being acquired for restoration. The Great Western Railways roundel, or shirt button was used on Engines and rolling stock in the period between 1934 and 1942.

Ex GWR Large Prairie engine 5199 spent most of its working life in the Birmingham area based at Tyseley from 1934 to 49. It is photographed here in the Forest of Dean, visiting from the Llangollen Railway. The image depicts the engine as she would have worked, pulling a local passenger service on a branch line.

Two Tanks, Didcot, August 2021 Two 'Great Western' tank engines on display at the Didcot Railway Centre (Oxfordshire, England), On the left is an 0-4-0 ST (Saddle Tank) loco, number 1338, built for the Cardiff railway in 1898. On the right is a 2-6-2T engine, number 5572, built at Swindon works in 1929. Just visible in the shed to the rear is GWR diesel railcar, number 22. These were introduced in the 1930s and were the forerunner to more modern diesel multiple units (DMUs). Date: 15th August 2021.

A black and white image of Modified Hall Class 4-6-0 No. 7903 Foremarke Hall, built in March 1949 and withdrawn from British Rail service in 1964. Although this engine could be considered a GWR engine, it was built after nationalisation, hence was always a BR engine. Photographed here on a sunny autumn day on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Steam Railway.

Great Western Railway saddle tank 1340 Trojan at the Didcot Rail Centre, Oxfordshire. This locomotive was built by the Avonside Engine Company in 1897, largely seeing service in the South Wales docks. It was finally sold to a Midlands colliery before finishing its working life. It has now been fully restored by the Didcot Rail Centre and can be seen here on the traverser in front of the engine sheds building up a head of steam in preparation for shunting duties.

The Great Western Manor Locomotives were lighter utility engines used on both passenger and freight. Bradley Manor was built in 1939 and withdrawn from service in 1965.

The Firefly class of locomotive was designed by Daniel Gooch for the Great Western Railway and saw service between 1840 and 1879. They were broad gauge locomotives running on rails 7ft 1/4 inch wide (ie 2140mm), a gauge peculiar to the GWR in the 1800s. Pictured here is a reproduction built by the Firefly Trust and completed in 2005 which now runs on broad gauge track at the Didcot Railway Centre in Oxfordshire.
