Here the Thames passes through the Goring Gap between the Chiltern Hills to the north and the North Wessex (or Berkshire) Downs to the south.

After heavy rain, the Thames rushing through Day's Weir near Little Wittenham, Oxfordshire. The Thames Path crosses the river over the lock and weir, carrying on upstream towards Abingdon. Apparently the name for Day's Lock and Weir comes from that of a local Catholic yeoman in the 17th century.

The church of St Michael and All Angels in the Thames side village of Clifton Hampden in Oxfordshire, England. The church, standing above the village and overlooking the river dates back to the 12th century. with additions from the 1300s. The Thames between Folly Bridge in Oxford and Iffley . A rowing boat is emerging from under the bridge which joins Boathouse Walk and Christ Church Meadow Walk. Next to this are some of the Oxford College boathouses on a stretch of the river famed for boat racing. Pleasure boats and punts are often to be seen here as well as rowing crews in training.

Standing on the historic bridge at Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire looking upriver. Here there are cafes, bars and restaurants overlooking the River Thames. Here also can be found boatyards where everything from rowing boats to river launches can be hired - or perhaps go on a river trip for an hour or two. This is a historic area for sport and is the site of the famous Henley Royal Regatta which has been held since 1839, gaining 'Royal' status under the patronage of Prince Abert in 1851. The approach to Day's Lock on the River Thames at Little Wittenham in Oxfordshire. This is the view from the footbridge once well known for the annual Pooh Sticks Championships! Turn right here and we reach Dorchester-on-Thames with its abbey church and buildings. Following the Thames Path over the lock and weir we eventually reach the town of Abingdon, Day's Lock is apparently named after a local Catholic yeoman in the 17th century.The image has been given a textured finish as a pencil drawing

A digital drawing of the superb view over the Thames Valley from Lardon Chase. Below is the village of Streatley-on-Thames in West Berkshire, whose church can be seen in the centre. Then further across, passing over the Thames (invisible here) to Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. Beyond that the lower slopes of the Chiltern Hills. Lardon Chase, also called Streatley Hill, is a nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) on chalk grassland rising steeply above the village.

A blue narrowboat having just passed under the central arch of Wallingford Bridge on the River Thames whilst ducks scatter towards the nearest bank! Wallingford is an ancient and picturesque market town on the Thames between Reading and Oxford Here was one of the most important Royal castles in England. The first mention of a bridge was in 1141 when King Stephen beseiged the castle and Queen Matilda.The present bridge apparently has traces of the medieval structure.

At the back of an old railway shed is an accumulation of luggage and other bits and pieces, some of it piled in the back of an old GWR van.

A boat named 'Snapdragon' moored at Goring-on-Thames - digital art developed from my original photograph. It's a late afternoon in August and the low sun lights up the scene just below the lock and weir. Here the Thames is passing through the Goring Gap - an opening between the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex (Berkshire) Downs - before flowing past Pangbourne and Reading en route to London and the sea. Not surprisingly this area has been a haunt for artists - including JMW Turner!

A view of Round Hill from the village of Little Wittenham in Oxfordshire. This is one of two hills known locally as The Wittenham Clumps which, being much higher than the local landscape, are a landmark in the area. This view from the lane next to Little Wittenham church looks over the nature reserve which surrounds the two hills - a popular area for walkers and kite fliers! From the top of the hill there are spectacular views over the Thames Valley.

At this point the river is properly called The Isis and as you walk along the Thames Path from here to Oxford you pass the Oxford University's college boathouses. The village itself is a conservation area, its narrow streets leading down to the river where you cross the weir to reach the lock. In the background, rising above the trees, is the Norman church of St Mary the Virgin, a Grade 1 listed building.

Looking upstream from the road bridge, the weir at Goring on Thames in Oxfordshire, England. A scene on the Oxford Canal captured from the bridge at Shipton-on-Cherwell in Oxfordshire, England. The canal here is very near Oxford and its junction with the River Thames. The bridge spans the waterway and leads to Shipton village and the canalside church of Holy Cross. The canal was the brainchild of the engineer James Brindley who died before the start of construction. It was designed to link Coventry and its coalfields with Oxford, the Thames and London, transporting coal and other goods from the Midlands. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The scene looking from the toll bridge over the River Thames to the church and houses clustered round the millpond at Whitchurch on Thames in Oxfordshire, England. Whitchurch is on the north bank of the river, opposite the village of Pangbourne in Berkshire on the south bank. The toll bridge connects the two. The church is the parish church of St Mary, originally medieval although it was extensively rebuilt in 1858 by the architect Henry Woodyer.

Here we are standing on the Thames Path next to Wallingford Bridge in Oxfordshire and looking over the river to the church of St Peter with its elegant open-work spire. The original church was destroyed by fire during the Civil War, the present one being built in the second half of the 18th century. It is no longer used as a regular place of worship. Wallingford stands between Oxford and Reading and was once an important royal town, the remains of its castle still standing by the river.

The road bridge at Henley on Thames which carries the A4130 from Henley in Oxfordshire over the river to Remenham in Berkshire. Built to replace an earlier wooden structure, this bridge was designed by the architect William Hayward in 1781 and was completed in 1784, the builder being John Townesend of Oxford. On the left here is the landing stage of the Leander Rowing Club reminding us that Henley is most famous for the Royal Regatta held every July (in normal times!). The bridge is a Grade 1 listed structure.

Wallingford is a picturesque market town between Reading and Oxford with the river flowing along its northern side, In medieval times it was extremely important as it was thge site of a major royal castle. It was also only the second town in England to receive a Royal Charter from Henry II in 1155.

The River Thames as seen from the north bank at Benson in Oxfordshire. Here we are just above the weir and lock - seen in the background and are just next door to The Waterside cafe and bistro - a lovely place to sit and look at the river. Benson is as well known perhaps for its RAF station just across the main road from here. A walk across the weir and lock along the Thames Path takes us to the ancient market town of Wallingford.

Behind us the river flows on to Wallingford where this walk started - and ahead is the town of Abingdon and the city of Oxford. However, immediately ahead on this walk is a riverside bistro - a lovely place to sit and relax with a coffee and pastry before retracing our steps.

Looking over southern Chiltern Hills and the Thames Valley from the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin at Ipsden in South Oxfordshire. It's late summer and the afternoon sunshine is catching the ripe barley. Harvesting is already in progress in some of the surrounding fields.

The present brick bridge was built in 1775 to replace an earlier wooden one which, legend has it, was used as an escape route by Dick Turpin. Just upstream is Sonning Lock and nearby is The Mill, now a theatre.

A digital painting of a gap in the hedgerow giving us a beautiful sunlit view over the Thames Valley. This image was captured on the road between Woodcote and South Stoke in Oxfordshire on an autumn afternoon and looks towards Wallingford and Didcot.

Tom Tower, Oxford Number of views as of 27th November 2018 = 1030. Tom Tower (Oxford, England) stands over the main entrance of Christ Church college and houses the loudest (and probably heaviest) bell in the city, Great Tom, weighing in at 6.25 tons. The square tower with its octagonal lantern and facetted dome was designed by Christopher Wren and built in 1681–82 by stonemason Christopher Kempster of Burford. This photograph was taken from the tower of St Mary’s University Church, which provides some of the finest views of the city's 'dreaming spires'. Date: 30th October 2010.
