Blood Red, detail of a stained glass window, Lichfield Cathedral, Staffordshire, England. The cathedral is dedicated to St Chad and Saint Mary. Its internal length is 113 metres (370 feet), and the breadth of the nave is 21m (68'). The central spire is 77m (252') high and the western spires are about 58m (190'). The stone is sandstone and came from a quarry on the south side of Lichfield. The walls of the nave lean outwards slightly, due to the weight of stone used in the ceiling vaulting; some 200–300 tons of which was removed during renovation work to prevent the walls leaning further. Lichfield suffered severe damage during the English Civil War in which all of the stained glass was destroyed. In spite of this the windows of ...

In the Nave of Ely Cathedral, Cambridgeshire, England, stands a large Mirror -- so that visitors are able to see the beautiful ceiling without straining their necks ! Built by William the Conqueror as a prominent outpost after the bloody and lengthy rebellion by Hereward he Wake, Ely Cathedral stands as a fine example of William's devotion to his Religion and to his overwhelming victory for the Heart's and Minds of that mixed of all races called the britons... Less well known is that "The Lord Protector" Oliver Cromwell closed the Cathedral for 10 years, due to a falling out with the local (Catholic) Clergy. Cromwell used it as a stable for his Calvary Horses..! Camera: Canon EOS 20 Featured in the group "High Quality Images"
